What are Executive Functions and Why are They so Important?

At Bright Kids Coaching, we often talk about the importance of executive functions, but what exactly are they, and why do they matter so much for kids—especially those with ADHD or learning differences?

Executive functions are a set of cognitive skills that help us plan, organize, focus, and regulate our behavior. Think of them as the "command center" of the brain, managing everything from completing homework on time to staying calm under pressure in a big game.

Strong executive functions are key to success in school, sports, and everyday life. According to Dr. George McCloskey, a leading researcher in executive function development, executive functions involve “a collection of mechanisms that work together to direct, coordinate, and control cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions to achieve goals.” This means that children who struggle with executive functioning may have difficulty staying on task, managing emotions, or following through on responsibilities—not because they don’t want to, but because their brain’s self-management system is still developing.

A Few Important EFs

There are more than thirty executive functions, but there are three that play a vital role in helping kids navigate challenges and reach their full potential:

1. Working Memory – The ability to hold and use information in the short term. This helps kids follow multi-step directions, solve math problems in their head, or remember what they were supposed to grab from their backpack.

2. Cognitive Flexibility (Flexible Thinking) – The skill of adapting to changes and thinking about problems in different ways. This is crucial for handling unexpected situations, shifting strategies in a hockey game, or coming up with new ways to approach a tricky homework assignment.

3. Inhibitory Control (Self-Regulation) – The ability to manage impulses, emotions, and attention. This helps kids resist distractions, stay focused on tasks, and control their reactions when things don’t go their way.

For kids with ADHD or learning differences, executive function challenges can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming. But the good news is that executive functions can be strengthened with practice—just like muscles!
